Fossil fuel production is expected to reach record levels in the United States this year. In 2016, the U.S. met about 86 percent of its energy consumption with production from domestic sources. Total energy production was comprised of:
Natural gas — 33 percent
Petroleum (crude oil and natural gas plant liquids) — 28 percent
Coal — 17 percent
Renewable energy (hydroelectric, wind, solar, biomass, geothermal) — 12 percent
Nuclear electric power — 10 percent
