Networking for Greater Impacts

FUNDING AGENCIES ARE MORE EXPLICITLY REQUIRING activities to expand the impact and reach of research. OSU is answering the call and strengthening our commitment to our land-grant mission by building a community to better connect people and resources. The goal is to help each other meet the impacts challenge with a focus on collaborative understanding, utilization and expansion of existing resources.

The OSU Research Impacts Network (ORIN) is providing opportunities to members and newcomers to begin development of best practices guidance for research impacts partnerships, along with a structured networking opportunity for members to better understand each other’s roles in research impacts at OSU.

ORIN was established by a partnership between the Research Office, the Division of Outreach and Engagement, and the Center for Research on Lifelong STEM Learning with the goal of improving process, communication, and accessibility related to existing tools for developing high-quality impacts associated with the OSU research enterprise. ORIN aligns with OSU Strategic Plan 3.0, specifically Goal 3 to strengthen impact and reach throughout Oregon and beyond and to enhance the impact of research addressing global challenges.

The group’s objectives include:

  • Understanding the current landscape of impact capacities and establishing a set of best practices and build capacity of investigators so they may excel in partnering, planning, designing, implementing, evaluating and budgeting impact activities
  • Defining and strengthening the relationship between research, engagement and impacts to better support the OSU land-grant mission and research agenda
  • Adopting an institutional vision and brand for research impacts at OSU to guide action and articulate to funding agencies the aggregate societal impacts OSU strives to achieve through research and engagement

While its meetings serve primarily as work groups, the network welcomes those who want to know more about creating highly effective research impacts, or who are interested in connecting with individuals on campus who can help them to do so.
